In response to yesterday’s post showing how we’re all packed and ready to go, I had a few of you out there asking what exactly is contained in those bags for our upcoming trip to the hospital…rather than a normal fashionable friday post, I thought I would share my packing list and “necessities” of what we’ll be bringing with us on our little getaway adventure {yes, I am trying to make hospital stay sound as glamorous as possible} đ
My Packing List

Driver’s license, insurance card, birth certificate paperwork, birth plan, checkbook, list of people to call
-
Toiletries
- Shampoo/Conditioner {hospital brand=no thank you}
- Toothbrush/paste
- Face wash
- Deodorant
- Brush
- Headbands/hair ties
- Moisturizing lotion
- Makeup
- Chapstick
- Hairdryer
- Pads {bringing “extra” although I hear you should stock up on what the hospital provides as theirs are the best out there=gross!}
- Clothing
- Pajamas (2)-I bought the kind that button up to make feeding easier
- Yoga Pants (2) and tops (2)-I found cute matching outfits at Old Navy which will be perfect for my “going home” outfit
- Long-sleeve tshirts {if I get cold at night}
- Bathrobe and nightgown{I don’t think hospital blue is necessarily my signature color}
- Flip flops/Socks {no walking barefoot for this lady}
- Sports bras/nursing bras/underwear/Spanx {yes, I am bringing Spanx to the hospital-Mom told me there is no time like the present for that spandex to start working its magic and “helping” my body return to it’s pre-baby state}
- Other Necessities
- Pillow
- Focus item for delivery
- Phone charger
- Laptop/iPod/chargers
- Magazines/books/Bible
- Camera/video camera/chargers
- Snacks {I was told this is an absolute must as I’ll want something ASAP post-delivery…we’ve got Goldfish, Sour Patch Kids, and cheese/crackers}
- Water bottle
- Boppy
- Nursing pads/lanolin cream {we’re waiting to buy a breast pump to see how feeding goes, as I didn’t want to spend $250+ on something until we had a “trial period”}
- Car seat installed in car with infant body support and strap covers
Of course there is also a list of essentials for Caroline to have on-hand as well:
- Diaper bag: bibs/burp cloths (2), blankets (2), swaddling blanket, hat, mittens, socks/slippers (2), Wubbanub pacifier
- Going home outfit
- Newborn size sleep and plays/gowns
- Jacques the Peacock
Lucky for us, we live a mere 5 minutes away from the hospital so if we forget something, we can have a family member or friend stop by and grab it for us…I’m sure there are other things I could be forgetting or will look back and say “I didn’t need all of that”, but I think we’re all set…now if someone would cooperate and play nice we could finally get this show on the road! Almost better than the hospital pads…the hospital mesh underwear:) Does it look like it could fit an elephant? Yes. But it's like a little present for your lady parts after birth:)
hahaha Cortney ^ said it best! When I packed my hospital bag, I packed a ton! Used hardly any of it! I lounged the whole time there. Good luck đ

I agree with the above comment. I hardly used anything I packed! I was happy to use the hospital stuff and get their things all gross rather than my own nice things! Good luck, Mama! So excited for your new adventure!!
LOL, Courtney about the mesh undies! I agree completely about that AND the pads. Also, I recommend snagging some of the big pads they make you lay on – they look like puppy pads, but they work wonders to protect your sheets. Good luck – little girls are such blessings! đ

That's so funny that you said that about Spanx…my mom always said back in her day (pre-spandex) that her mom taught her to wrap a cloth diaper around her tummy to get it back to it's pre-preggo status. She's the only mom I've ever heard talk about that before now.
Hopefully, baby Caroline cooperates and comes very soon!

I personally thought the hospital pads were disgusting. I'll be bringing my own this time! It's true about the underwear though! They even make actual wraps for helping your body get back down to normal and it's just for the hips and abdomen if you don't want to deal with the whole spanks thing.
Sounds like you're all set!! And I'm with you, I over packed and tried to make it all as glamorous as possible — haha! And you know what? I'm glad I did! I had everything I needed and although I looked like TOTAL crap in the photos after J was born, it was better than if I wouldn't have been prepared… and J looked way cute in his little outfits, cute blankets, birthday hat, etc. etc.
Oh, one thing I would recommend taking just to have… a notebook and a pen? Once everyone got to the hospital (I was induced) they all placed a bet on J's stats, so I used the notebook to write down everyone's guesses…it was fun and a cute thing for his baby book.

Your list sounds great! I tend to over pack for anything because I always want to be prepared for anything that might come up. The hubby always teases me, but you never know!

Looks like you are all ready! Being prepared makes you feel so good about everything.
One thing I would recommend for food after…maybe some fruit such as apple and grapes. I basically wanted nothing to do with bagels, crackers, etc. I loved the juicy fruit–you'll be pretty thirsty after so I think that's why! I'm sure you have had a million suggestions about everything but I thought I'd throw that in the mix!

Sounds like you are prepared as you can be! My hospital is a bit over an hour but there is a mall close by so we can always run out if we have to.
One thing to make sure you bring home from the hospital (and if you could convince them to give you two you will be so happy) is the blue nasal bulb they have to suck out her nose. You will use that all the time in the beginning and also when they are sick. There is no other bulb like it on the market that is anywhere as good! Try and grab two…one for at home and another for your diaper bag!

I read awhile back that Brooke Burke uses ace bandages after giving birth she gets the like 4 or 5 inch ones and then wraps her belly in it.. Do that! Then you wont have to work with the spanx to potty..

Oh, my! This is a walk down memory lane! I had forgotten about the mesh undies. Ha! I didn't like the hospital pads, and I'll refrain in a public forum what my fav item was for myself. But I also say grab the nasal bulb thingy for the baby. The kind you buy are not nearly as good. Now that I'm due with my second in July, I'm committed to trying to pamper myself better this time around. This list will help me remember what to pack! Nice button-up PJs and all the makeup and hair products will be a must!

Don't forget her baby book as well! The nurses will do her footprints in them right after she is born! Also, thatnwas the only time I found that I could fill out the baby book. Once I came home after my kids, I forgot. Also, after my second, the doctors gave me a big ace bandage type thing to wear. I brought several home with me! It was a little easier to manage than span, I think. And definitely helped!
YES! Steal as much of the hospital mesh underwear as you can. Also, you can hand wash it at home if you run out. I know that's gross, but seriously, that underwear is awesome. IF you have a c-section (I hope you don't!), ask for an extra body wrap thing to take home with you. I wore mine about two weeks after the c-section. It's kind of like Spanx, but better. It gives support, and it velcros around your body and pulls it all together.
Great list..didn't think about the boppy! Just to pass on info i received..at my breastfeeding class,to not give pacifier to baby till breastfeeding is established.. like 2-3weeks in.. even to tell nsg not to give meds via bottle ..just syringe.. i put that in my birth plan too!

I think you are very prepared!! I have a friend who just had her second child and swears by getting some Depends, she said it was so much better than changing those gigantic pads.
every time you post I keep thinking it will include baby pictures! But I think you have a great list and mama's always know best…great thinking on the spanx!

You are SO organized! I like you LOVE a good list! I have lists for most everything in my life! If it's not on a list it doesn't get done!
This may sound very high maintenance but I'm a postpartum/neonatal nurse and a lot of my patients have been bringing small noise machines/ i pod docking stations. They say its relaxing to have the background music and it really comes in handy with drowning out the noisy hospital noise.
And as far as the mesh panties go- yes they're hideous, but really practical for the fist few days/weeks!
