The one you’ve been waiting for… the big reveal! I know I have made you wait long enough, but I assure you it’s WELL worth it = the transformation that nearly took two years, but the end result is even more fabulous than we first envisioned… Carson’s tween boudoir in all its colorful glory!
Inspired by my darling daughter’s love affair of neutrals= I know who is she??? We met in the middle and found a design that perfectly suited her specific preferences + parameters and incorporated some pops of color that you’ve come to expect from our Hello Happiness Home.
This lively space is designed to grow with her… from her current tween obsessions into a space that is still sophisticated and feminine once she is a bit older as well. Our bold, independent girl deserved a room equally as dynamic as she is, and this redesign delivers just that. The soft pink and orange accents balance perfectly with the room’s chic aesthetic, while the playful pops of color in the cushions and art add that extra dash of whimsy. With thoughtful touches like the geometric quilt and a dash of gold accents, this space truly encapsulates the essence of a bright + beautiful tween bedroom chosen to reflect Carson’s personality and unique style, full of life and light ;).
Let’s talk through the big details and then I’ll give you the goods about the accompanying art, decor and accessories and the sources, too:
the walls + windows
From the get-go, Carson was adamant about having her walls painted a clean, crisp white. Luckily for her, we already had the perfect hue because it’s painted throughout the main areas in our home as well. We used Sherwin Williams Pure White [SW 7005]. Just as in other areas of our home, we changed up the sheen for various parts of the room: eggshell for the walls, flat for the ceilings and semi-gloss for the trim. We also worked with our favorite local carpenter to create the casings on her walls to frame out the space and give it a bit more dimension and sophistication. Super easy and efficient and not a big budget item, SO it’s a great way to add some artistry without breaking your room budget.
After that, we started with the linens for the window treatments. I started pulling some swatches for her to look through and she immediately fell in love with this Schumacher Elias Fabric in Red and Pink. Not only is the print perfection, but it’s reversible so you can do a ton of mixing and matching with the tones, too. I then worked with Jen from Brave Maggie Designs to complete the measurement process on how much fabric I’d need to purchase and then she owned all the details when it came to the style of window treatments we wanted to create as well as the drapery hardware in the brushed gold. She was absolutely AMAZING to work with and I cannot say enough great things about the entire process… Jen made everything super simple and the finished product speaks for itself! PRO TIP | and yes, this is where I highly suggest spending your money in a room = custom window treatments totally make a space look complete and give tons of visual interest.
the goodness of a gallery wall
I always said I’d never do another gallery wall again just because they can be quite difficult to design, but when your sweet daughter begs for a combination of her favorite art prints and paintings above her bed, you can’t help but say yes. We first went to my good friend Brittany Atkinson Art to source one of her gorgeous + oh so iconic Shadowbox Acrylic Pieces in hot pink… of course I loved the girl power pop of this statement artwork and the fact that my friend made it for Carson was just icing on the cake. From there, we scoped out a few more artist friends including Brooke Lancaster Art, Hannah Dean Fine Art and a few more for good measure = I just love how each piece feels like a mini celebration of creativity. I also went shopping one afternoon to a few other local stores and scooped up The World is Your Oyster Print [a perfect reminder for a tween ready to tackle the world], the green + pink palm leaf and then grabbed this fun abstract piece from Minted for good measure! The eclectic components of mixing frame styles and materials, and various sizes and shapes made it feel both curated and spontaneous… and totally captures Carson’s fun, outgoing spirit. After a few hours of measuring and hanging the full gallery [thanks to the hubs for his crazy OCD self] we completed it without any major meltdowns and nugget was THRILLED with the finished product.
the divine details
Let’s face it… good design is fabulous, but it’s the accessories and extra well-thought-out details that truly transform a space to call it complete. Case in point, the showstopper abstract piece above Carson’s dresser is something she and my super talented friend Kelly Terrell created together. Something truly unique and a piece of art she can take with her into her own home someday! It’s like a pastel dream come to life with swirls of color and shimmering gold accents that elevate = seriously one of a kind. We also wanted to bring out some additional pops of bold hues with the accessories on her dresser… colorful travel books to inspire her next adventure and of course a cute framed pic of her and her sissy. And of course no room in our home is complete without a decorative object like this faux potted orchid from Stray Dog Designs.
Oh, and that Pottery Barn Teen woven egg chair? Total hangout goals! The cozy wicker vibe, needlepoint pillow from Furbish Studio, Schumacher Ananas Print Pillow, Mint Green Knotted Pillow and Annie Selke Red and Pink Cushion make it the perfect spot to curl up and chill.
the beautiful bedding
Couture linens that hug you as soon as you enter the bed each night = there is simply nothing better in the world and my daughter adores all the soft + special linens. This time, we headed straight to the world of Annie Selke to grab everything we needed to make her bed luxe yet comfortable. Pure perfection by way of their Trio Stripe French Blue and White Duvet Cover + Boyfriend Matelassé Coverlet, and then the Classic Hemstitch White Sheet Set!
Of course no bed is complete without properly layering up the pillows so that’s where I incorporated a bold Anthropologie quilt + coordinating euro shams, orange scallop square varieties from Folkulture and then coordinating Elias Print Pillows to match her drapery. Another accent pillow was incorporating the Tropical Ananas print from Schumacher, this time in an oversized bolster version. It’s like the bed is begging for a sleepover or a lazy weekend morning [a mom can dream]... my personal favorite touch is the embroidered pillow case that says ‘me and you.. just us two’ by a local shop, Sew What Gifts. I first did a similar style on Caroline’s pillows and so I wanted to continue this sentimental tradition with nugget = this is what I tell her every night when I tuck her in, so a nod to our relationship, too.
fabulous finishing details
I just love showing off every single solitary detail of a room reveal… it’s such a special space for my little lady and just evokes JOY = something she can do every single day with a smile!! Treasured keepsakes are tucked into all the sweet spaces like her painted pottery, pics of her and her sister, souvenirs from some of our travels and of course all the accessories she selected for her room that make it unique and set it apart from the rest.
Be sure to take note of the iconic Chucho Chandelier on the ceiling. Another fabulous light from my local Tennessee friends at Stray Dog Designs = we went with white so it would blend with the walls + ceiling, but LOVED the shape and dimension it brings to her boudoir!
Hope you enjoyed this little play-by-play of the latest room reveal from our happy + colorful home. I always say your home should be a true representation of who you are and that’s exactly what this special space is for Carson… now onto another renovation project = Jeff’s office, the playroom and both of the girls’ bathrooms. Here goes nothing 😉
