Day 22: Rant about Something
This is a hard topic…there are a number of things I could step up on a soapbox for (thank you notes, social media do’s and don’ts, using correct grammar, etc), but today I’ll speak about a big pet peeve of mine: rude and unsafe drivers.

Listen, we all had to take driver’s education, work our way through a learning permit, and then take the dreaded test to get our driver’s license when we turned 16, but I think the older we get, we tend to forget the rules of the road. It’s not a race, and I assure you that if you cut people off, you will maybe get 1-2 cars ahead, but does that make it worth the risk to everyone around you?
If you’re in the HOV lane and you’re the only person in the car, you walk the line of getting a ticket. If you bypass lanes and lanes of traffic just to cut someone off right before you reach the exit, I wouldn’t blame them for giving you a “friendly” little wave or tap of the horn. If a kind person lets you in front of them, for heaven’s sake, can you just PLEASE nod or give them a thank you hand?
It baffles me that there are such rude drivers out there, and when I see people doing hazardous things while driving (i.e. texting/emailing, putting on makeup, etc) I seriously want to reach into their car and smack them. This is how people have wrecks and how people get injured, or even rose, lose their life…because of drivers who don’t pay attention.
I think you all get my point. Let’s all focus on driving when we are behind the wheel!

Day 23: Things I’ve Learned that School Doesn’t Teach
1. You are in charge of your own destiny. Live the life YOU want. Follow your dreams so that you don’t have regrets later in life.

2. Money doesn’t buy happiness. I’d rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable. Money doesn’t define who you are as a person.
3. Admit when you make a mistake. As hard as that may be (and I know I struggle with this sometimes), it’s best to admit you were wrong and apologize so you can move forward.
4. Be smart with your money. Save, save, and save some more. If at all possible, start your retirement fund as soon as you are able…set aside money in an emergency fund for a rainy day when you just might need it. You can never be too financially savvy!
5. Do unto others as you would have done to you. It’s as easy and as complicated as that. Be kind to everyone you meet!

  1. Ashley says:

I always rolled my eyes when my parents told me to start putting money into RRSP's – I wish I had started as soon as I was able to! If only we listened to everything our parents said 😉

  2. I couldn't agree more with your five life lessons. I try to apply the Golden Rule daily. Oh, how sweet this world would be if everyone did this!

Another that I try to abide by daily is "Leave things better than you found them." Even if it's just cleaning up someone else's splashed water around the sink of the office restroom, I try to put this in action!

  3. I think the best advice my dad ever gave me was to start a 401k as soon as I could. That way the money would be out of my paycheck and I wouldn't even know it was missing. There is no way I could have been that diligent to save in my twenties!

  4. melissa says:

All such important lessons!#5 is a big one for me. I just don't understand people who aren't friendly and polite to others. It's such an easy thing to do and it makes all the difference in the world. And being smart with money is huge! One of the most valuable things my parents taught me is understanding how to manage money and the importance of saving. I hope I'm as successful in teaching that to Blaire!
